NEW PROJECTS GRANTED FOR INCREASED INSIGHTS IN HUMAN MODELING – FOR SAFER MOBILITY
The "No AI About Us Without Us" initiative, now included in SAFER’s portfolio, promises to enhance traffic safety by providing critical data and insights into the unique challenges faced by Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) with reduced mobility.
Led by researchers at Chalmers’ Revere lab, this project aims to address the critical safety needs of VRUs across various traffic environments, ensuring their protection and inclusion.
Purpose and Goals
The primary goal of this initiative is to develop automated road monitoring and active safety systems that enhance road safety for all users. By gaining a thorough understanding of the motion patterns and safety challenges of VRUs, the project will provide practical recommendations for infrastructure improvements and tailored safety measures.
Open source dataset
The project focuses on improving the safety and understanding of VRUs with reduced mobility by analSzing their motion patterns and identifying the safety challenges they face in different settings. These challenges include both external threats and perceived dangers. Central to the project is the collection and compilation of an open-source dataset using Revere’s advanced research vehicle, SnowFox, equipped with state-of-the-art sensors.
Expected outcomes
The data and insights gathered will lay the foundation for the Proof of Concept phase, which aims to build an AI-enabled, inclusive, and infrastructure-aware traffic monitoring and analysis system. This system will be designed to meet the genuine needs of VRUs in real-world traffic scenarios, ensuring both technological robustness and user-centered design.
Project details
The project, running until December, 2025, is financed by Vinnova and AoA Transport with a budget of 2 MSEK. The partners include Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) at Chalmers, Chalmers Industriteknik, Social Work at GU, and Boid AB. Yinan Yu, Chalmers University is the project leader.
This innovative project marks a significant step towards safer, more inclusive road environments for all users, particularly those with reduced mobility. The collaborative effort of experts from various fields underscores the commitment to enhancing traffic safety through cutting-edge research and technology.
