New SAFER Partner Project: Equal Safety for the Whole Population of Powered Two-Wheeler Riders

Sep, 17 2025

The global number of motorcycles and mopeds has nearly tripled over the past decade – while fatalities have increased by 30%. Studies also show that female riders and riders with higher BMI face a higher risk of severe injuries in crashes.

The new partner project Equal Safety for the Whole Population of Powered Two-Wheeler Riders, funded by VINNOVA, will develop new methods and tools to better understand injury risks and create effective protection systems for powered two- and three-wheeler riders. The focus is on variations in rider size, sex, posture, and vehicle types.

The project is led by Autoliv in collaboration with Chalmers and BETA CAE (Cadence), and is based on the use of the SAFER Human Body Model. Expected results include new insights into crashworthiness for motorcyclists and the development of novel protection concepts to reduce the risk of severe thorax injuries.

Duration: June 2025 – March 2027
Budget: 6.86 MSEK (49% funded by VINNOVA)
