Positive development in remote automated vehicle operation through the SAFER platform
The field of remote automated vehicle operation is gaining significant interest among SAFER partners and across the European arena. We are pleased to announce that the recently concluded REDO project has received a follow-up and is associated to the SAFER platform: Remote Automated Vehicle Operation 2 (REDO2).
Remote operation offers key benefits, including enhanced safety through human intervention in complex situations, increased flexibility by managing multiple vehicles simultaneously, cost-effectiveness by reducing the need for onboard systems, and scalability through easier implementation of updates across fleets without physical alterations.
The goal of the REDO2 project is to further expand knowledge and create opportunities in the emerging field of remote operation of automated road vehicles. This project addresses the challenges of supporting remote operations of vehicle fleets from both technical and non-technical perspectives, including laws, regulations, and traffic management. It continues the efforts from not only REDO but also from HAVOC, which started as a SAFER pre-study during the previous phase.
The project will feature two PhD candidates and will support SAFER’s Impact Areas: Human Body & Mind and Safety Performance Evaluation.
Understanding the challenges and limitations of remote operation is crucial for improving traffic safety as AVs are deployed, and REDO2 is poised to make important contributions in this area.
Planned activities
The project is divided into seven work packages focusing on:
1. A system-of-systems approach to remote operation
2. Human factors in remote operation
3. Design and support for remote operation
4. Laws and regulations
5. Administration
6. Communication and dissemination
7. Implementation and demonstration
