Proactive Assessment of Cognitive Work Environment in Ambulance Care

Oct, 24 2024

We are excited to announce the addition of a new project to SAFER’s portfolio from our Post-Crash Working Group, Proactive Assessment of Cognitive Work Environment in Ambulance Care (PreKo 2). This project aims to enhance the understanding and evaluation of cognitive workload in ambulance healthcare, contributing both to societal benefits and research advancements.

The project will:

1. Map cognitive workload factors in ambulance care, including types of strain, critical abilities, timing, frequency, intensity, and consequences of errors.

2. Further develop the PreKo 1.0 model into PreKo 2.0 for structured cognitive load assessment in ambulance services.

3. Establish a process for using PreKo 2.0 to assess cognitive workload and recommend interventions when inappropriate workload levels are detected.

🚑 Traffic Safety Impact: By improving the cognitive work environment, ambulance personnel can reduce time spent on non-essential tasks and remain focused for longer periods, ultimately enhancing care quality and efficiency. Understanding cognitive load helps optimize ambulance design, equipment, and overall work conditions.
