SAFER Lunch seminars autumn 2019 - schedule is set!

Sep, 16 2019

The schedule for our appreciated Thursday seminars for the autumn is now set!

Every Thursday 11:30-12:30 a seminar, shared by two researchers from SAFER, is given. The themes are based on our four research areas, competence networks and connected research resources. We also invite other relevant speakers, e.g. new partners. The main objectives are to share knowledge, get inspiration to new projects and network. We also offer access to the seminars via Skype.

SCHEDULE

Week 36 (Sep 5): The Functional Safety Standard ISO 26262 – and Assessing safety of automated vehicles – a general overview
Dr. Per Johannessen, Functional Safety Expert, Combitech, discusses the functional safety standard for the automotive industry, ISO 26262 and how it relates to SAFER and its research. Speaker: Dr. Azra Habibovic, Senior researcher at RISE and Research area director at SAFER for Road user behaviour talks about safety of automated vehicles. A recurring question is "How do you know that an automated vehicle is safe enough, and how safe is safe enough?".

Week 37 (Sep 12): Precautionary Safety: Safe decision-making and control for autonomous vehicles and the new EU expert group on CCAM
Jonas Ekmark, Product area owner, New technologies, Zenuity, will give a brief update about the company, including focus areas and main research questions related to vehicle and traffic safety. Dr. Mattias Brännström, Technical expert at Zenuity presents autonomous vehicles need to drive safety without being overly cautious. Ingrid Skogsmo, Senior advisor, SAFER presents the new European Commission’s expert group on Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM).

Week 38 (Sep 19): IGLAD & Naturalistic data collection
This week’s Thursday seminar is hosted by John-Fredrik Grönvall, Area manager for Naturalistic Driving Data at SAFER.  The seminar will focus on accident data collection in India and Japan, including a general update about IGLAD - Initiative for the global harmonisation of accident data.

Week 39 (Sep 26) SaferAfrica & Smart HMI for automated trucks
This week’s seminar is hosted by Jac Wismans, Chalmers and Linda Meiby, Scania. Jac will presents the SaferAfrica project – the African-European dialogue platform on road safety. Linda Meiby, Technology Leader HMI, Scania, presents valuable insights regarding future HMI for automated trucks.

Week 40 (October 3): The Handbook for Road safety measures & Volvo Cars work with safety critical systems
Have you ever heard about the Handbook for Road safety measures? This is the ultimate guide for us working with traffic safety and provides you with an overview of current knowledge on the effects of 142 road safety measures. Rune Elvik, one of the authors from the SAFER partner TØI will present this very special book. It is an indispensable tool for anyone working with road safety, whether political, administrative or research. Martin Hiller from Volvo Cars will give an update related to their development of software and the new electronic platform and how they work with safety critical system and relates to e.g. ISO26262.

Week 41 (October 10): Lotta Jakobsson, Research area director for Human body protection is hosting this event.
With the main purpose to inspire other SAFER researchers, Lotta Jakobsson will talk about the international coordination of knowledge in the area of rear seat safety and child occupant protection, as an example of successful project dissemination and international interaction. International multidisciplinary workshops are held on a regular basis to identify high-priority research topics and strategizes toward their implementation, while joining efforts in spreading recent research results. Specifically, Lotta will share experiences from the recent workshop in September this year, involving 19 international researchers focusing on the topic of future mobility challenges including autonomous drive and car sharing.

Katarina Bohman in a Technical Expert in Biomechanics at Volvo Cars Safety Centre, with more than 15 years of experience in child safety in cars. Katarina Bohman will highlight and discuss the challenges of child safety in future cars. The presentation will include children interacting with the car from the outside, in addition to child occupant protection challenges inside the car – taking increased automation as well as new types of car ownerships.

Week 42 (October 17): Our partners University of Skövde and CEVT is hosting this event.

Erik Brolin, Associate Senior Lecturer in Product Design Engineering, University of Skövde talks about Anthropometrics and Driver Ergonomics and a presentation about Smart urban-mobility approach to car-parking is given by Yacine Atif, Professor, Institute of Information Technology, University of Skövde

Roaming for parking contributes to hampering business and environment sustainability in urban cores today, while future autonomous vehicles are expected to free drivers from daunting activities, including parking. In both current and future cases, the search for parking should not exacerbate traffic in city centers. Cities, car manufacturers and parking-service providers need to take a step ahead to address current issues and get ready to anticipate future ones. Meanwhile, visibility over urban traffic and parking dynamics is brought by cutting-edge Internet-connected sensors and other device technologies that expose new sources of data. This Internet of Things (IoT) evolution could provide historical grounds for optimizing the outcomes of parking-related decision-marking processes, in order to improve sustainability indexes. We demonstrate this claim through a proposed IoT-based approach to cloud-based parking and navigation. The approach is shown to scale its predictive accuracy to the higher-end, as further parking resources are made available, while reducing transit duration.

Week 43 (October 24): Open Research at AstaZero – future possibilities through open call
Ines Heinig, project coordinator at SAFER, is hosting this seminar about Open Research at AstaZero. Learn about how you as a researcher can utilize this very unique test facility and get inspiration from our successful performed projects.

Week 44 (October 31): Autumn break

Week 45 (November 7): No seminar
Lindholmen Connected event this date: https://www.lindholmen.se/event/lindholmen-connected-sapochefen-om-hotbild-ny-sakerhetsskyddslag

Week 46 (November 14): Traffic safety cooperation with China and India – current projects and future possibilities
We take you through SAFER’s ongoing cooperation with China and India and discuss future possibilities for us to get valuable insights from these markets and set up common projects.
The China-Sweden Research Centre for Traffic Safety started in 2012 with the aim to deliver world-class traffic safety research that reduces traffic accidents and casualties with a focus on China, with the ambition to establish traffic safety as a core value for a sustainable society. Seven years on, there are now ten partners involved and an number of projects have been run. Currently, two joint projects are ongoing, a number of proposals are waiting for approval and the team prepares the strategy for the coming third phase of the centre. The seminar will give an overview of the joint work as well as the plans ahead.

Sweden and India have signed a bilateral cooperation agreement in April 2018, which aims to stimulate collaboration in several areas of innovation. During 2020, the partners in the Sweden/India collaboration will start the first pilot project. This project aims to develop a ideas that support the long-term vision, to:
• Create a platform for applied research and innovation in the area of safe, secure and sustainable transports and smart cities.
• Be a showcase of concrete bilateral collaboration that fosters innovation and business growth in Sweden and India.
• Provide recommendations and know-how for national and international transport policy making.
• Support India to take leaps in development of its transport system towards fulfillment of policy targets by implementing state of the art transport solutions with high safety/cost benefits.

Week 47 (November 21):  Voyager – Advanced remote logging of driving data
This week’s seminar is hosted by Fredrik Von Corswant, Connected research resource leader at Revere. The Voyager project, with self-driving trucks along highway 40 will be presented.

Week 48 (November 28) Competence network Safety assurance
This week’s seminar is hosted by the Competence network leader Fredrik Sandblom. He will present the main conclusions made by SAFER’s competence network Safety assurance so far and how we together can approach the task to argue that our autonomous vehicles are tolerably safe.

Week 49 (December 5): NTF and movement sickness
This week we have an exiting mix with presentations from two new partner NTF and a discussion about movement sickness by Joakim Dahlman from Chalmers.

Special invitation to SAFER members only.

Welcome!
