The HRH Prince Michael of Kent, Great Britain, is a leading advocate of road safety, working to support the UN Decade of Action. The Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards recognise outstanding achievement and innovation world-wide whereby each year, the most outstanding examples of international road safety initiatives are given public recognition through the scheme. The annual Award presentation ceremony was today witnessed by more than 350 international professional road safety experts and advocates.

“We congratulate everyone involved to the honorable awards and it is gratifying that our researchers' efforts are recognized on such a level. The projects that have received the awards have contributed, and will continue to contribute, to increased global road safety”, says Magnus Granström, SAFER's Director.

Improved road safety in Africa
SaferAfrica was created as part of the EU Horizon 2020 programme to create a dialogue platform to strengthen the cooperation among governments, research institutions and NGOs across the Europe and Africa. SaferAfrica has supported national and local governments to improve understanding of current weaknesses and country management. It has also provided training and ready-to-implement projects and examples of international good practice. The platform provides a foundation for the recently launched Africa Road Safety Observatory, which is a strong collaborative programme involving many African countries and international organisations including World Bank, Global Road Safety Facility, The African Union, the Sub-Sarah Africa Transport Policy Programme, UKAid, FIA, UNECE, and the African Development Bank.

Providing information to decision makers
The open access web-based SafetyCube Road Safety Decision Support System has been developed to provide policymakers with the best scientific information on risk factors and the effectiveness of measures. A rigorous science-based approach using peer-reviewed literature provides a rich knowledge resource for all stakeholders.
The DSS is the first globally available tool that provides comprehensive information on the nature and magnitude of both risks and measures associated with road users, vehicles, infrastructure and post-impact care.
