Three new Competence projects in SAFER’s portfolio

Nov, 25 2020

SAFER's portfolio for competence projects consists of cross-cutting projects that cover more than one research area or are of a different nature. The portfolio is now enriched with three new projects aiming to build multidisciplinary knowledge for our partners:

-    Smart Urban Mobility
-    AI driven mobility
-    EU Coordination Drive Sweden

Smart Urban Mobility
The objective of the project is to enable and create the prerequisites needed to create and implement smart urban traffic zones (smart zones), through geofencing technology, in urban traffic environments. The purpose is to tackle problems connected to congestion, high road usage, air quality, noise and traffic safety. Smart urban traffic zones involve an extensive network of players from stakeholders to end customers. The aim is for them to ensure that the smart zones which are being tested and created meet the right requirements and that they are usable and can be implemented. In this project SAFER will have an advisory role and the connected research resource Revere will participate in demonstrations. SAFER partners are Chalmers, RISE, Scania, AstaZero, City of Gothenburg, University of Gothenburg, Swedish Transport Administration and VTI. The project will continue until August 2022. Vinnova/FFI is the financier and the budget is 6.9MSEK.

AI driven mobility
This strategic project within Drive Sweden plans to build a strong network of mobility and AI experts, and establish a project portfolio that can accelerate the use of AI in the mobility area for people and goods. By active facilitation of collaboration within academia, private and public sector, we want to both increase the knowledge and understanding of the potential of AI and identify concrete and relevant opportunities for both companies, cities, regions and citizens. This initiative fits very well in SAFER's overall work to utilize AI as a tool in the research. The project aims to:

1. Establish a network of organizations and individuals able to drive concrete change with focus on AI as enabler for more sustainable mobility.
2. Substantially increase the knowledge and awareness of AI and its potential for the mobility sector.
3. Based on joint challenges, identify minimum five concrete cases and possible solutions that would benefit society and citizens, possible to realize within 3 years.
4. Initiate and start minimum three projects aiming at developing concrete solutions.
5. Identify, and if possible quantity, minimum five long-term opportunities that if realized would bring substantial value to society and citizens, as well as driving Swedish industry’s competitive advantage.
6. Long-term plan for continuation including financing, actors etc.

EU Coordination Drive Sweden
This strategic project within Drive Sweden enables continued strong commitment to the work and project-related to CCAM (platform, partnership) and Horizon Europe's work program (specific road safety). The project can be seen as a first step in building up management and portfolio where all of Drive Sweden's areas can be included. Furthermore, the project is expected to lead to a clear agenda for internationalization which in the long term contributes to Drive Sweden's goals and effects according to the Effect Logic, and thus to the parties' growth. VTI, SAFER/Chalmers, AB Volvo, Autoliv, RISE and Scania are the project partners and SAFER’s Scientific advisor Ingrid Skogsmo is leading the project.
