Two new partners join SAFER – Lund University och Zenseact will create research and knowledge to help save lives in traffic

Sep, 28 2020

Transport & Roads at Lund University core expertise stretches over evaluation of infrastructure designs and solutions, driver assistant systems and automated vehicles. Zenseact develops a software platform for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Autonomous Driving functionality targeted at personal mobility vehicles. Their current focus is a solution for unsupervised self-driving for highway and freeway use.

“We are happy for two additional partners and their valuable knowledge and engagement. We are looking forward to set up projects including the new partners. In total, SAFER includes 37 partners working together to create a future sustainable and safe transport system”, says Magnus Granström, SAFER’s Director.

Lund University – valuable methods for data collections and accident modelling
Transport & Roads holds unique expertise and more than 40 years’ experience within the domain of surrogate measures of safety, i.e. proactive tools for measuring safety even before an accident has occured. The university has also a long experience working together with developers of emerging technologies, for example video analysis with the common goal to extract safety-relevant information. The methods used include behavioural and traffic conflict observations, for example usage of advanced data collection tools, accident modelling, data linkage. Research to better understand vulnerable road user and the problem of their integration into complex urban environments are also key priorities. Transport & Roads division consists of ca 20 senior researchers and 15 PhD students. Of them, 3-4 seniors and 3 PhD students have their major activity within traffic safety domain.

Aliaksei Laureshyn, Senior lecturer at Lund University says:
“We are looking forward to new connections with both researchers and the industry, particularly when it comes to technologies for intelligent data collection and autonomous vehicles”.

Zenseact – full automation to support a safe transport system
Zenseact’s platform includes state-of-the-art active safety (ADAS) functionality, fleet data collection for continuous software development, and SW deployment back to the vehicle fleet through Over-The-Air updateability to support continuous improvement of features and performance. The combination of ADAS and AD features and a quick, efficient development loop that makes use of real world data will yield unprecedented safety performance. It will bring new benchmarks for real-world traffic safety. Currently 12 Industrial Ph.D. student projects with relevance to SAFER’s research areongoing.

Jonas Ekmark, Head of Business and strategy at Zenseact, says:
“We would like to collaborate with SAFER partners on research topics that are strategically important for traffic automation and active safety technology. Current examples include methodology related to functional safety and safety assurance, and also knowledge about human factors in the transition from manual to automated driving. Also, we would like to find ways to make maximal use of being able to query data from a large customer fleet in order to accelerate development”.

Zenseact is a young company with a lot of safety heritage. Its predecessor Zenuity AB, which has been a partner in SAFER since 2017, was started by its parent companies Volvo Cars and Autoliv, having focused on traffic safety and ADAS/AD development for decades. Zenceact was spawned as a result Zenuity being split in July 2020.
