This course will introduce the subject, describe different concepts, potential developments and also limitations.

Different applications, cars, trucks buses will be covered. Simulation tools will be demonstrated.

Course overview

• Definitions: power source, energy source, hybrid, plug in hybrid electric vehicle, electric vehicle
• Common variants of hybrid driveline:  Series , parallel, split hybrids
  • - Electric motors, generators
  • - Different types of energy storage:  Battery, supercapacitor
• Potential fuel saving advantages when using hybrid propulsion:
  •  - Kinetic energy regeneration
  •  - Engine load point optimization
  • -  Engine start/stop
  • -  Enabling ICE down-sizing
• Difference between cars, buses, trucks, city vs country road driving, electric range demands, cost constraints, legal differences, weight targets etc.
