Apr, 23 2018

The Association of Motor Journalists (VdM) in Germany honors Professor Dr. Ing. Lotta Jakobsson with the prestigious Golden Diesel Ring for her extraordinary commitment to child safety and vehicle safety research.

The jury is convinced that her research and development work at Volvo Cars and Chalmers contributes significantly to the fact that children in cars do not die in crashes and are less seriously injured. Special attention was also paid to her consistent research for the improvement of child safety seats. The "Vision 2020", Volvo Cars’ vision that no one should be killed or seriously injured, considers the jury particularly noteworthy.

Lotta comments on the award:
"I am very honored to receive this award. Especially I am delighted by the acknowledgement of our child safety achievements ensuring protection for our dearest, who require special concerns in cars. Safety is about protecting people. With a human perspective everyone’s ambitions should be with the mindset of zero fatalities and injuries in road traffic, like the Volvo Vision 2020. I appreciate this award as recognition for our long-term devoted safety research and development at Volvo Cars. Working together developing knowledge is the key, I am very proud that I am part of this community”, Lotta concluded.

Lotta Jakobsson received the award on April 20, 2018 in a ceremony in the Oldtimer Salon, Frankfurt. With the Golden Diesel Ring, which incorporates a fragment of Rudolf Diesel's first experimental engine from 1893, the Association of Motor Journalists has been honoring outstanding personalities every year since 1955, who have contributed with outstanding knowledge to traffic safety and the reduction of accident consequences. Lotta Jakobsson, this year's winner, is the 72nd member, the third woman and the second non-German in the circle of Diesel Ring bearers.

"The work of Lotta Jakobsson has significantly shaped vehicle safety, among other things with the development of the side airbags, the optimization of the side impact protection and whiplash protection," said Professor Dipl.-Ing. Dietmar Otte, previous carrier of the ring and former head of Accident Research Hannover Medical School, in his laudatory speech.

Professor Lotta Jakobsson is responsible for SAFER's research portfolio in the field of Human Body Protection and is also a member of the research centre’s management team.
