ABSTRACT
In September 2017 Euro NCAP issued its most recent roadmap for promoting safer cars for the European market. The focus of the roadmap is on the use of advanced technology to deliver improved passenger car safety but also on how it might assist other road users. New tests for passive and active safety are outlined but also, for the first time, tertiary safety is addressed. Beyond the safety rating, Euro NCAP promotes the safe deployment of automated driving technology into the vehicle fleet by means of a categorisation of the type and degree of assistance/automation offered. Information is provided to consumers to allay fears but also to maintain realistic expectations of the degree of automation offered and of the need for vigilance in cars where the level of automation is low or is not universal. Finally, an outlook will be provided for the future of Euro NCAP test and assessment of safety and automated driving functions.
