Open source AD on public road

NEVS are developing a completely new way of urban mobility service with purpose built autonomous vehicles. These vehicles are built to attract people to share rides with both friends and strangers, to offer both open space as well as privacy but not necessarily at the same time. NEVS believes ride sharing services will have a big climate impact by reducing traffic load in big cities and reduce the need of private owned vehicles which also will free up a lot of space in the cities.
To achieve this NEVS have started a lot of activities to prepare for a role out of this kind of service. One of these activities is to apply for a public road permit for an autonomous vehicle. NEVS will not develop the AD stack inhouse, for the launched service, but for the purpose of this activity and for the purpose of competence build-up, NEVS decided to use an open source solution, Autoware, in the vehicle for the application.
This talk will describe the experiences NEVS got related to this application and working with an open source SW stack. Furthermore during this application NEVS have worked with CARLA as a simulation environment and also with strategies for scenario generation. This will also be presented. And yes, NEVS got the permit in the end!
