Welcome to a workshop to identify suitable use cases for new proactive method based on surrogate measures of safety for studying the effects of the physical and digital infrastructure on the interaction between road users in a mixed-mobility environment!

Abstract
SUperSAFE ‘SUrrogate measures for SAFE autonomous and connected mobility’ will study the problem of the safety evaluation of the interaction between conventional vehicles and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). The project builds on the notion that vehicle automation is posing new risks that the traditional accident-based and proactive safety analysis methods are unable to investigate. SUperSAFE will select the relevant variables drawn on the newly identified risks posed by CAVs, and with these will develop a new proactive method based on surrogate measures of safety for studying the effects of the physical and digital infrastructure on the interaction between road users in a mixed-mobility environment.

Purpose of the workshop
The aim of the workshop is to identify relevant use cases to be adopted as a base for project development. A use case is defined in SUperSAFE as a particular interaction or manoeuvre in which the physical and/or digital infrastructure can play a role in the safety of the events. Just as an example in an urban area, a use case could be the vehicle turning right and bicycle crossing at signalized intersections; in a rural area, it can be the interaction of two vehicles in the merging area of a 2+1 road (or the entrance/exit ramp on a motorway) or waving sections. The takeout for the audience is the impact they will have in the project development but also by the results of the project a better understanding of how to improve the safety of the specific interactions from automotive, infrastructure, and communication perspectives.

The target is to identify 3-4 use cases in urban and rural areas. The identification of sites in the real world where those events are more frequent and/or severe (or more likely to happen) will follow the selection of the use cases.
