Join us  for a deep dive dialogue on the topic of "Enhancing Road Safety in Winter Conditions through Effective Lane Keeping Systems!

Modern vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance systems rely on information from cameras, radar, sensors, and even LiDAR to support various driving tasks. These systems, including lane-keeping assistance, are crucial for enhancing traffic safety. However, their effectiveness can be compromised in challenging weather conditions such as snow and slush.

winter roadInternational and national studies have shown significant improvements in traffic safety associated with lane-keeping assistance technology, especially when it can detect visible road markings. In Sweden, research indicates that vehicles equipped with lane-keeping assistance systems can reduce personal injury accidents (head-on and single-vehicle accidents) by approximately 30% under existing conditions.

Approximately 30% of traffic operations in Sweden are estimated to involve vehicles equipped with lane-keeping systems. Research suggests that current road marking requirements in existing regulations meet the visibility needs of these systems and are machine-readable. This means that even with wear and tear, road markings remain detectable. Wet-reflective road markings, which were introduced as an extended requirement in 2020, are likely to be suitable for a broader application. These markings become visible in wet conditions due to their textured surface, providing guidance even in less-than-ideal weather.

Key question in the dialogue: How can we cost-effectively support lane-keeping systems to function optimally in snowy conditions, leveraging the synergy between road infrastructure and vehicles? In this dialogue we would like to assess the current state of knowledge and also to identify any research we might need to initiate to get closer to a solution.
