Older Driver Safe Mobility: Balancing Independence and Road Safety

Date
8 May 2025 11:30-12:45
Place
SAFER, Lindholmen Science Park, Lindholmspiren 3A room Aldman or online (Teams)

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Sjaan Koppel from the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) to discuss her research about elderly drivers. Dr. Koppel, an Associate Professor at MUARC with a PhD in Psychophysiology, is a leading expert in traffic safety and the mobility needs of vulnerable road users.

With a rapidly ageing population, the number of older drivers is expected to rise significantly in the coming decades. While driving remains essential for older adults' independence, mobility, and well-being, age-related declines in sensory, cognitive, and physical abilities may affect driving performance and heighten crash risk. This presentation examines the intersection of ageing, older driver licensing policies, and safe mobility. It underscores the challenges of balancing older drivers’ mobility needs with community safety concerns, emphasising evidence-based strategies for this growing demographic to promote safe mobility.
