We would like to invite you to listen in to two special presentations we will have at our next  meeting within SAFER’s Working Group Long-term impairment from injuries in traffic environment. We’ve invited guest speaker Maria Håkansson who will share insights about the Swedish Trauma Registry (SweTrau). We will have the opportunity to discuss various issues with Maria, e.g. information on and follow-up of traffic damage that leads to more long-term consequences (impairments) and compare with information collected via STRADA. Secondly, our group member Martin Östling will give a presentation about the Analysis of frontal car-to-car crashes, occupant demographics, airbag activation, crash configuration and injury pattern. Results and potential next steps in how to further improve car occupant protection in future cars will be presented. We will have good time for questions and discussion!

SweTrau - The Swedish Trauma Registry

In 2008, The Swedish Trauma Society, a sub-association of The Swedish Surgical Society, initiated the development of a Swedish Trauma Registry (SweTrau). The official startup for SweTrau was in June 2011, and the dataset developed for the registry is very much in line with the European consensus protocol, ”The Utstein Template”. At present 48 hospitals in Sweden receiving serious trauma are connected to SweTrau. The registry mainly focuses on injuries that demand surgery and/or intensive care, although every hospital decides what degree of injury that motivates registration. In international comparisons the most serious injuries with ISS (Injury Severity Score)/NISS (New Injury Severity Score) >15 will be studied.

Analysis of frontal car-to-car crashes: occupant demographics, airbag activation, crash configuration and injury pattern

Several studies have reported on the incidence of injuries in low to moderate severity frontal crashes, i.e. crash severity below 40 km/h, where the injury risk is relatively low, but the exposure is very high. However, there is still very little known about what is causing injuries in these crashes. To increase the knowledge in this area we set up a GIDAS field data investigation with the aim to:1) investigate the car and occupant demographic distributions, airbag activation status, and crash configuration with and without airbag activation and 2) investigate occupant injury frequency, injury risk and injury pattern in frontal crashes of different crash severity with airbag activation. Results and potential next steps in how to further improve car occupant protection in future cars will be presented.
