Sustainable Speeds for Planned Mixed Traffic Interactions
To promote active transport like walking and cycling, it is crucial to maintain a speed limit of maximum 30 km/h in areas where different types of road users interact. Despite clear recommendations, Sweden's cities and municipalities have not taken a firm stand on this issue. Studies by Folksam/Karlstad University indicate that automatic braking systems can only prevent about 20-30% of collisions, highlighting the need for reducing speed limits in mixed traffic environments to achieve Vision Zero.
Interviews with municipalities will be conducted to examine current and planned measures for improving safety in mixed traffic environments. Furthermore, accident data will be analyzed based on the injured and those causing injuries, considering road user group, age, and gender within urban areas. The results from these steps, along with a synthesis of previous findings, will be carried out and subsequently summarized into recommendations.
Traffic safety benefit: This project will provide knowledge that can be used to create a safe and equitable road transport system with appropriate speed limits.
