New partner project in SAFER’s portfolio: Employers in focus for improved road safety
Nearly half of all fatal road traffic accidents are work-related – meaning that one of the individuals involved was either on duty or commuting to or from work. Despite this, road safety remains an under prioritised aspect of occupational health and safety in many workplaces. The new project “Safe Travel at Work” aims to change that.
Recently launched, the project is led by NTF Väst (National Society for Road Safety) and funded by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). Its goal is to raise awareness and strengthen employers’ knowledge on how to create safer conditions for employees travelling as part of their work – regardless of the mode of transport.
Key activities in the project include:
- A nationwide survey involving at least 1,000 individuals who travel for work, to investigate how employers currently address road safety.
- Training and outreach targeting at least 400 employers through seminars, meetings, and a national webinar.
- Press and information campaigns with wide reach through media and social channels, aimed at raising awareness among the general public and decision-makers.
The project will also collect insights and share guidance on how employers can actively contribute to reducing road traffic accidents, improving the working environment, and supporting more sustainable travel. The core message is clear: road safety must be recognised as a responsibility of the employer – requiring clear policies, systematic follow-up, and a workplace culture that promotes safe behaviours in traffic.
