Full title: Systematic traffic safety implementation at the local level: Trafiksäkerhetslyftet and traffic safety culture in Swedish municipalities

Implementation at the local level is crucial for the development of traffic safety in line with the national road safety target for 2030. There are several possibilities for municipalities to influence traffic safety: as road managers, planners, influencers, employers, and procurers. To support municipalities in these roles, Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) and Swedish Transport Administration (STA) have developed a local traffic safety audit tool (Trafiksäkerhetslyftet). This project studies how the use of Trafiksäkerhetslyftet influences traffic safety culture in Swedish municipalities and the implementation of measures to increase traffic safety at the local level. The project will advance knowledge in an area that is receiving increasing attention in research and at the global arena—namely, traffic safety culture—with a focus on Swedish context and societal actors. The project continues previous studies by Wennberg & Dahlholm (2022; 2024) on integrated approaches to traffic safety. The project is carried out in collaboration with municipalities, SALAR, STA, and other actors.

The project is funded by the Swedish Transport Administration through the FOI portfolio Planera (TRV 2024/99621).
