Over the past two decades, active safety systems have transformed road transport and contributed to significant improvements in traffic safety. In this seminar, Eleonore Sultan from Volvo Cars will reflect on the journey of active safety development, from early driver support systems to today's increasingly sophisticated technologies.

Drawing on long experience from the automotive industry, the seminar will explore what has worked better than expected, the safety benefits observed in real-world traffic, and the challenges encountered along the way. It will also highlight important lessons learned, including barriers to implementation, unexpected outcomes, and insights gained through years of development and evaluation.

Looking ahead, the seminar will discuss some of the key questions facing the next generation of safety systems. As driver support technologies become increasingly advanced and integrated with automation and AI, how can we assess their real-world safety benefits, understand their impact on human behaviour, and ensure that safety improvements reach all road users? The seminar offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the past while exploring the future of active safety.

Practical Information

SAFER Thursday lunch seminars are held both at the SAFER office, Lindholmen Innovation District, building Kuggen, Lindholmsplatsen 1 or online (Teams).

• In-person attendance: Lunch will be provided at the SAFER office, starting at 11:30 AM. The seminar will then be held in a hybrid format from 12:00 to 12:45 PM. Registration is required for lunch. Please register for lunch by 12:00 PM on the Tuesday before the seminar.
• Online attendance: No registration is needed. Simply join via the Microsoft Teams link sent to all SAFER partners ahead of the event. The seminar is held in a hybrid format from 12:00 to 12:45 PM.
