Victor Meulenkamp wins Best Student Contribution Award at DDI2026

Oct, 23 2026

Congratulations to Victor Meulenkamp from the University of Bern, Switzerland, winner of the Best Student Contribution Award at the 10th International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention (DDI2026), held in Gothenburg on 20–22 October!

Victor received the award for his contribution “Beyond Fixation: A Systematic Review of Peripheral Vision Use in Driving”, co-authored with Katja Kircher, VTI and Christian Vater, University of Bern.

His research explores how drivers use peripheral vision to monitor their surroundings and respond to potential hazards without looking directly at them. By systematically reviewing existing research, the work aims to improve our understanding of how visual attention functions in complex driving situations; an important piece of the puzzle in understanding driver distraction, inattention and road safety.

Recognising the next generation of researchers
The Best Student Contribution Award recognises outstanding scientific contributions from students participating in DDI. The award considers not only the quality of the research itself, but also the ability to communicate it effectively to a scientific audience.

The assessment is based on four criteria:

  • Scientific quality: Originality, relevance, methodological soundness and contribution to the field.
  • Clarity of the message: A well-structured presentation with clear conclusions.
  • Time management: Effective use of the allocated presentation time.
  • Audience interaction: The ability to respond to questions and engage in scientific discussion.

The winner is selected by the Conference Co-chairs together with selected members of the Scientific Committee.

Victor received €500, an award statuette and free registration for DDI2028, the next edition of the conference.

Congratulations, Victor! We look forward to following your research and welcoming you back to the DDI community in 2028!
