DDI2026 Proceedings now available – explore the latest research on driver distraction and inattention

Oct, 27 2026

The scientific contributions from the 10th International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention (DDI2026) are now collected and available online. With the Book of Abstracts, conference presentations and posters, the proceedings offer a valuable overview of current research, emerging technologies and future challenges in driver attention and road safety.

DDI2026, held in Gothenburg on 20–22 October, brought together international researchers and experts from academia, industry and the public sector. The scientific contributions reflect a broad and rapidly developing research field, combining human factors, behavioural science, vehicle technology, data analysis and safety assessment.

What does the latest research tell us?
Several clear research themes emerge from the DDI2026 Proceedings.

  • Beyond eye movements – understanding attention in context. Research increasingly explores not only where drivers look, but also what they perceive, process and respond to. Studies on peripheral vision, mind wandering, cognitive load and attentional demands contribute to a deeper understanding of what it really means to be attentive while driving.
  • Smarter and more adaptive driver monitoring. A strong research focus is on making driver monitoring systems more reliable, context-aware and effective. This includes detecting distraction, drowsiness and impairment, understanding driver behaviour and developing systems that respond appropriately to different driving situations.
  • Automation brings new questions. As driving automation evolves, researchers are examining how drivers engage with automated systems, maintain situation awareness, manage transitions and remain ready to intervene when needed.
  • New interfaces and emerging technologies. Several contributions investigate the distraction potential of vehicle interfaces, touchscreens, voice control and conversational AI. The research highlights both opportunities and challenges in designing technology that supports rather than competes with driver attention.
  • From measurement to real-world safety impact. Another important theme is the development and validation of methods for assessing distraction, predicting crash risk and evaluating safety interventions. The ambition is to connect scientific understanding more closely with practical vehicle design, safety assessment and road safety outcomes.
