WiTag - the Mobile Phone as a Wireless Reflector Tag

Many vulnerable road users are today equipped with smart mobile phones while moving around in traffic. These smartphones normally have a rudimentary GNSS receiver and means for wireless communication via different technologies. The goal of the WiTag study is to investigate the possibility of using a smartphone as a wireless reflector tag, i.e. an app in the phone timely communicates its detailed position data to nearby road users in order to enable warnings to be issued. Positioning accuracy, its potential improvement and weak parts are studied, as well as ad hoc peer-to-peercommunication solutions. Swedish traffic accident involving fatalities or severely injured pedestrians are analysed to define viable scenarios for a possible WiTag app.
