WiTag - Pre-study
This is a pre-study where one of the aims is to evaluate the technical feasibility of a larger project (WiTag, draft project description attached). The intention is to use GPS and wireless technology of a smart phone to alert a driver and/or the VRU carrying the phone. The BikeCOM application has shown that positioning accuracy and timing latencies must be improved in these kinds of systems to make them a viable safety technology. Since the vehicle also needs to be GPS equipped, differential positioning calculations can be made and relative accuracy improved (relative positions are more important than absolute). Real-time aspects of communication (WiFi direct and IEEE802.11p) and calculations need to be investigated as well as energy budgets. The most important use cases will be identified with respect to user (children, elderly, impaired, etc) and situation (rural, urban, time of day, expectancy of having to interact, crowded or not). Following that a “risk map” can be established to enable/disable the safety system in different areas (to reduce nuisance alarms). It shall also be investigated if it is more beneficial to warn the driver or the VRU in a specific situation.
