Project

System Safety through Combination of HMI and Dependable Systems (SHADES)

Period
1 July 2008-30 June 2011
Project manager
Jonny Vinter

In-vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are designed for a primary function without faults being present in the systems. However, errors do occur and it will be very important to handle these errors: driver errors, technical errors in the vehicle and errors in the communication with other vehicles and the infrastructure. Thus, there is a need for research about how to combine human factors and HMI-aspects with aspects of dependability. Swedish research for traffic safety and automotive technology has a leading international edge. The research community has earlier regarded HMI and dependable systems as two separate research areas and interdisciplinary approaches to handle errors in driver-safety systems have not yet been successful. System Safety through the Combination of HMI and Dependable System (SHADES) is an ongoing research project and an example of an interdisciplinary approach. The project will integrate the research on HMI with the research on dependable systems to reach a multi-disciplinary research area.
