Project

Research Infrastructure for Naturalistic Driving Data - Prestudy

Period

In 2009 more than 35 000 people were killed on European roads and the European Commission is aiming for a 50% decrease by 2020. Research to find and suggest better countermeasures are needed to fulfill this target. Since 2006, SAFER the Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre at Chalmers has built up a state-of-the-art research infrastructure for naturalistic driving data; this includes IT infrastructure (database and storage), analysis tools, facilities and world-class competence in the area. The infrastructure currently hosts 100 000 hours of naturalistic driving data. More data collection is planned within new projects. This data describes drivers´ behavior and their interactions with the vehicles and road environment. Current research on the naturalistic data includes studies on accident causation, behavioral factors behind driver distraction and inattention, driver modeling and validation of simulator and test tracks experiments. The data provides opportunities for basic research in computing science, mathematical statistics, vehicle safety and behavioral sciences, thus promotes multi-disciplinary research. Both national and international research groups are involved in on-going projects. The grant will cover operation cost of IT infrastructure, facilities, and personnel cost for analysis platform support, after the projects that collect the data ended.
