Beaming crashes into the trauma room:
Crash injury assessment in the field

Speaker: Dr. Dan McGehee, University of Iowa

In the US, advanced life support paramedics arriving at the scene of a motor vehicle crash have advanced training that allows them to make important life-saving decisions without conferring with supervising doctors from a trauma center. The downside of this independence is that the receiving hospitals may not be aware of incoming complex trauma cases until just a few minutes before they arrive.

To increase the time a trauma hospital have to prepare, a smartphone app called TraumaHawk was developed. TraumaHawk is used by the police and first responders to photograph key elements of the crashed vehicle(s), such as where and how much of the vehicle had been crushed. Such photographic evidence can then be used to help assess injuries far before the patient arrives at hospital.

This lecture will discuss the principles of automotive traumatology and the development of the TraumaHawk app.
