We welcome you all to a SAFER seminar by Prof. Makoto Itoh, University of Tsukuba who is visiting SAFER on the 8th of October.

Speaker: Prof. Makoto Itoh, University of Tsukuba
Host: Giulio Piccinini

Abstract. Technologies for autonomous driving systems are rapidly developing all over the world. However, it is almost impossible to realize “fully” self-driving cars which run in the real complex situations as conventional cars do.
A human driver still needs to sit on the driving seat as a responsible driver. Therefore, avoidance of human overtrust in and/or overreliance on such autonomous driving systems is a vital issue in order to maintain and further improve the safety.
In this presentation, we review the notion of overtrust and overreliance, and discuss how to achieve appropriate relationship between human and autonomous driving systems based on our previous research.

Bio. Makoto Itoh is a professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Information and Systems at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. He received his PhD in engineering from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, in 1999. His research interest includes human-machine interaction, trust in automation, and safety and reliability. He is a member of IEEE and HFES.
