In January 2025 the SAFER Working group To identify and improve your organization’s work within Traffic safety held a workshop with representatives from the industry (mainly representatives from outside of SAFER). In the workshop we explored their challenges and research needs. One that was brought to the table was the role of safety technology. In the workshop we discovered that:

  • many companies aren’t aware of all the functions of modern trucks and how they can use these tools to their fullest
  • it’s a common problem with getting acceptance for certain features, often related to geofencing and speed-control but even seatbelts were brought up as something with an increasingly low acceptance.

The goal of this pre-study is to map how much knowledge and acceptance there are when it comes to usage of safety-supporting technology.

Planned approach and activities

The mapping will consist of two different surveys and 8-10 interviews. The surveys will be distributed among companies that have a large fleet of trucks. The first survey will focus on fleet managers and their knowledge of, and use of data from, a selected range of systems. The second survey will aim at the drivers and explore their attitude towards the usage of different kind of safety systems.

The questions asked will be formed together within the working group and we’ll also invite the attendees from the January workshop to participate.

After the surveys we’ll conduct interviews with both drivers and fleet managers to get insight into their reasoning and how they reflect on the result.

Expected results

The result will give us a better picture of how available safety technology is used and if there are any difference in attitude between the different tools. It will also show what could be done to increase the usage.

The result will be shown in a project report and presented at SAFER seminars, preferably in the form of discussion with different experts.
