Project

BikeSing: Exploring single-bike crashes from multiple data sources

Period
30 September 2012–31 December 2013
Project manager
Marco Dozza

The aim of this project is to analyze multiple accident-related datasets to: Determine how these datasets can be combined to answer research questions which each dataset alone cannot answer; and Generate a project proposal for a larger study that will answer the research question identified by the current study by combining different datasets. In this pre-study, three causation areas will be considered in order to describe the contributing factors for single-bicycle accidents: Environmental factors (e.g. road surface, weather conditions etc.); Human factors (e.g. age, gender, experience, distraction); and Interaction factors with other road users (e.g. influence of other vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists' behavior on single-bicycle accidents). For analyzing single-bicycle and bicycle-motor vehicle accidents, four datasets will be used and combined: Accident Data (STRADA- police and hospital reports); Insurance Data (IF data, mainly bicycle-motor vehicle accidents); Subjective Data (Questionnaire from SAFER project MASCOT2); and Naturalistic Cycling Data (from BikeSAFE project). By using the four datasets in context of (single-)bicycle accidents, this project will: Analyze STRADA accidents involving bicycles with focus on single-bicycle accidents; Analyze IF accidents involving property damages which are not reported e.g., in STRADA (only insurance data); Analyze MASCOT2 questionnaire and report the results with focus on single bicycle accidents; Analyze Naturalistic Cycling Data involving bicycles with focus on single-bicycle accidents (BikeSAFE project); and Generate a future proposal concerning bicycling safety based on knowledge acquired by comparing some of the above mentioned analyses to the project and also identify potential SAFER partners to involve in the proposal.
