Project

CAE Tools for Composite Body Concept Assessment

Period
1 April–31 December 2010
Project manager
Magnus Oldenbo

Within the automotive industry lack of CAE tools for composites is limiting use of composites in for example car bodies. In addition the EARPA position paper for European FP7 materials related research supports the need for lightweight material design concurrent simulation methods. SICOMP has experience from working with the aircraft industry where CAE is widely used. Aircraft industry uses prepreg as well as textile reinforced composites (e.g. NCF). State of the art (SotA) in car bodies is NCF and braided pillars and beams. SICOMP has world-recognized knowledge on NCF from other projects. The focus is to apply SotA methods including latest methods of modeling for Aeronautical materials at SICOMP into car development CAE tools. The proposed work is directed towards concept design of composite structures making use of the current SotA when it comes to modeling strategies.
