PISC - Post Impact Stability Control

The project is an applied engineering science project and it has the aim to contribute to solutions that reduces injuries/occurrence of multiple-event accidents, to benefit for 5-10% of all accidents. It hereby contributes to the traffic safety goals of FFI. Multiple-Event Accidents causes a significant part of injuries in traffic accidents. The secondary events are often more dangerous than the first. The first is relatively easy to detect. The driver is heavily disturbed in first impact, which means that automatic interventions to the vehicle dynamics can be of large help directly after first impact. The project envision an active safety function that reduces the injuries that else can be expected. The research studies how much benefit there could be, how the vehicle motion should be changed, how the driver interaction can be handled, and how the vehicle dynamics actuation should be done for this type of function. The envisioned function belongs to a class of autonomous driving in the sense that it aims to control a vehicle without the need of driver input. However, one important difference from other classes is the presence of high dynamics close the limit that must be controlled. The project is led by Volvo Cars. Chalmers is carrying out research. Funding is applied for from FFI. The second part of the project covers the period 2012-01-01 to 2013-12-31.
