This research aims at determining how driver inattention (including distraction) influences crash risk. It will develop a statistically validated inattention-risk function describing how an increase in inattention performance variables in a specific context leads to increased risk. Three key developments are proposed as a basis for this inattention-risk function: (1) the development of a validated, continuous event severity measure combining a measure of safety margin and a measure of injury risk, (2) the development of observable performance-based quantifications of inattention, and (3) the development of measures relating inattention to event context characteristics such as stimulus onset. This research will also apply state-of-the-art automatic head tracker analysis software and assess its feasibility relative to manual video reduction. The main result in the form of the inattention-risk function is straightforwardly tied to many safety countermeasures.
