Welcome to the lunch and networking seminar!

The Lunch & Networking seminar week 43 is hosted by Ines Heinig, SAFER’s Project Coordinator and responsible for the AstaZero Open research program.

Open Research at AstaZero: Program status and practical tips for current call
Speaker: Ines Heinig, SAFER Project Coordinator
The Open Research at AstaZero Program is financed by RISE and Chalmers and funding curiosity projects by providing FREE access to AstaZero’s unique full-scale test environment for future road safety. A call is open now with submission deadline November 10th (https://azopenresearch.fluidreview.com/).

TRUBADUR (Truck drivers’ behavior in interactions with vulnerable road users)
Speaker: Ron Schindler, Chalmers.
Ron is a PhD student at the Division of Vehicle Safety in the Accident Prevention Group. His research focuses on the analysis of in-depth road databases and naturalistic driving data to conduct safety benefit evaluations of future active safety systems.
TRUBADUR is one of the successfully finalized projects funded within the Open Research at AstaZero program. Ron Schindler will present experiments and preliminary results of the project TRUBADUR (Truck drivers’ behavior in interactions with vulnerable road users). Pedestrians and cyclists are vulnerable road users in traffic. Especially in collisions with trucks, the injury outcomes can be severe. Active safety systems that can prevent or mitigate these situations need detailed driver models as an input. The study presented is a first exploration of this area with the aim to start closing this research gap. Thirteen participants drove an instrumented truck in the city environment at the AstaZero test-track. After some baseline recordings, the drivers experienced 2 interactions with pedestrian and cyclist dummies, during right turn maneuvers. The results indicate that even before entering the intersection, there is a clear difference in the speed profiles with respect to the presence of a vulnerable road user.
