Full title: Safira Score – validating a business model for traffic safety certification of heavy transport

Euro NCAP Safer Trucks rates new truck models – it does not certify individual vehicles. Trucks in service are often specified below the rated configuration, since many safety features are optional extras. This makes the recommendation that transport buyers require four- or five-star trucks hard to use as a contract requirement. SAFIRA (Safety Assessment for Fleets – Independent Rating & Assurance) develops and validates an independent assessment that verifies individual trucks (per VIN) against Euro NCAP’s methodology – and later also the haulier’s organisational safety work – at Bronze, Silver and Gold level. The method is tested on real trucks and in a real procurement situation together with Dagab, the project’s needs owner. With around 40% of European road deaths being work-related, the project also strengthens the link between traffic safety and the work environment.

Traffic safety benefit: Gives transport buyers a verifiable way to demand safe trucks – speeding up the uptake of safety technology in the trucks actually on the road.

Connection to other projects: Builds on the SAFER study AuST (2026); uses Euro NCAP Safer Trucks as the core of the vehicle rating.

Key words: Euro NCAP Safer Trucks, heavy trucks, certification, procurement, fleet safety, work-related road safety
