SAFER’s competence area leader in the field of driving simulator applications is changed; Alexander Eriksson from VTI is replacing Lena Nilsson as of December 1, 2017.

Transport Forum is the largest annual conference for the transport sector. At Transport Forum scientists and the transport sector's many stakeholders met for knowledge exchange and networking. The conference is organized by VTI, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, and held in Linköping January 10-11, 2018. SAFER has a new member from in the management team, Matteo Rizzi, Trafikverket. Matteo has a long experience of working with traffic safety related research and analysis. Matteo will work as research leader for Vision zero in the management group. He will help secure that SAFER works towards the overall aim to support the Swedish bold vision "Vision Zero".

The research area Care and Rescue is expanding its research portfolio with six new associated projects. This area contains research aimed at saving lives and reducing injuries during the critical hour following a traffic accident, such as improved incident detection and assessment, improved on-scene care and rescue and as well as reducing secondary long-term effects of traffic accidents.

The final program for the study tour to Halmstad University and Cycleurope is now set!

The invention jalp!, developed to save lives of cyclists and originated from SAFER, is now further developed at Chalmers Ventures Entrepreneurship School.

One of the first accepted projects within the Open Research at AstaZero Program has finalized testing at the AstaZero proving ground. The project called “HMI for autonomous vehicles in traffic (Hatric)” is led by MariAnne Karlsson, Chalmers/Design & Human Factors and investigate how the "driving behavior" characteristics of AD cars affect users' understanding, trust and acceptance of AD in different situations.

Today, November 19, it is two years since the inauguration of Revere, a vehicle lab in which high-tech research on future self-driving vehicles and technologies that can save lives in traffic is ongoing under the SAFER research umbrella.

On this World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, SAFER turn the thoughts to the millions who have lost loved ones on the world's roads this year.

The successful SAFER project VICTIg - Vehicle ICT Innovation Methodology - has now been finalised after five years of research. The project has been aiming to find methods for efficient development and test of the software intense ICT functions that enables active safety functions for automated and assisted vehicles. Three conference papers, one journal paper, and one licentiate thesis have been published in the project.

The Human Body Protection project portfolio is being broadened with yet another new SAFER associated project, CompMethGlass II (Computational Method for laminated Glass in crashes), which aims to develop material models for PVB and adhesive joints. Also, a methodology for predicting failure in the area of adhesive material in the glass to car body connection will be developed.

ViP Driving Simulation Centre has established an attractive environment for co-operation and competence development as well as for sharing and exchanging knowledge and experience in the field of real-time human-in-the-loop simulation. Hosted by VTI, ViP has successfully introduced driving simulation in research and product development by developing and providing high quality tools, methods and open software. The resulting competence and simulation platform is used by various actors for innovation and development of future vehicle functions, infrastructure, and transport system solutions by applying advanced driving simulation.

Funding for 2018 is already available for curiosity projects that want to test and develop innovative ideas at AstaZeros unique proving ground.

On September 20 SAFER invited to a whole day seminar on the latest research on child occupant protection. About fifteen international researchers shared their state-of-art safety research, discussed future opportunities, with the target to set the future agenda for child occupant protection. A special focus was how to align user expectation and the user experience with optimized safety in the context of changing mobility modes.

In spring 2018, Sweden will host an international conference about autonomous and connected vehicles for EU ministers and commissioners.

It was a successful conference with sharp lecturers and delegates. Three Directors-Generals and a Minister, countless experts and researchers filled the two days with the latest in traffic safety. The Tylösand Seminarium is an important meeting place for everyone working to achieve Vision Zero. Authorities, companies and representatives from the society participate.

On September 21, Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf will visit AstaZero to learn more about the unique test facility and to experience demonstrations of automated vehicles. The demonstrations will show how a truck operating in city traffic can avoid a collision with the vehicle ahead. Also, the Swedish king will witness how accidents with cyclists who appear in the blind spot, can be prevented. A demonstration with cars in high speed that can automatically perform advanced maneuvers and remote control of low speed vehicles will also be accomplish. The visit to AstaZero is a gift to the King on his 70th birthday.

Uniti is a Swedish startup developing an electric city car, optimised for high performance and agility in urban environments, with a user experience that replaces “press and pull” with “touch and swipe”.

Europe’s automotive industry has joined forces with research institutions and other stakeholders to test and evaluate automated in-vehicle technologies in real traffic in eleven European countries, including cross-border driving. L3Pilot, a four-year project, kicks off today in Wolfsburg, Germany.
