Four new pre-studies funded - aiming to contribute to the development of SAFER and building knowledge within traffic safety

AI Powered Awareness for Traffic Safety – a new SAFER associated project

The project idea is to fuse multiple data sets, both new and existing, from the traffic system in a city and apply AI algorithms and other new pattern recognition technologies to be able to identify and predict different events in the traffic system. Focus is on identifying different types of hazards that could cause accidents and disturbances.

SAFER welcomes four new partners to the research community

ASTUS AB, DuWill AB, Hövding and Viscando are SAFER’s new partners that will contribute to research and knowledge sharing to support the creation of a safe and sustainable transport system.

CO2 effects on driver state and driving performance will be analysed in new SAFER project

Recent studies suggest that moderate CO2 levels may affect negatively human state and performance. Since these levels have been commonly found inside of standard vehicles, their effects on driver state and performance need to be investigated. This project will shed light on this potential problem.

Three new SAFER Board members: Thomas Andersson, Astrid Linder and Claes Avedal

We welcome three new members to our SAFER Board! Thomas Andersson, Vice President for the Gothenburg Mobilisation at Volvo Cars will be our new chairman, replacing Karin Svensson. SAFER researcher Astrid Linder appointed Professor of Traffic Safety

Astrid Linder has been appointed Professor of Traffic Safety, with a focus on injury prevention, at the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, VTI. Astrid has contributed to SAFER's research with valuable expertise since the start of SAFER and she has extensive experience and deep knowledge within traffic safety.

Goods delivery under the Last-mile with Autonomous Driving vehicles (GLAD) – a new SAFER associated project

The GLAD project will develop an initial knowledge base on efficiency, safety and human experience of ADVs for the first and last mile delivery of goods in Sweden, and on how to create a balance between these three aspects from a socio-technical perspective.

“SITIS Connected Safety-Bus platform” to accumulate real-time traffic and driver related insights on Indian Roads

The SITIS collaboration arrived at a key milestone when it completed an 8-month pilot run of the SITIS Connected Safety-Bus platform, which will now be adapted into real-time operations in partnership with KSRTC. This project is envisioned to be conducted over a year in real-life operations, thus collecting valuable data that can define Indian traffic conditions and transport eco-system, as well as driver behavior.

Successful joint seminar – starting point for closer collaboration with Cykelcentrum

Today, SAFER and Cykelcentrum jointly arranged a seminar - “We share the space – bicyclists and motor vehicles interacting; challenges and solutions - to share results and discuss common challenges ahead, as well as address thoughts on solutions. The seminar was well attended, almost 100 participants from many different disciplines participated in the dialogue. The seminar was also the start of a closer collaboration between SAFER and Cykelcentrum.

Road data lab – a new SAFER associated project that supports improved road safety by making data sets accessible

There are lots of different stakeholders on the roads. Many of them are collecting huge amounts of data for various purposes, such as autonomous driving, maps and navigation, public transportation timetables, infrastructure maintenance and planning. Fit2Drive – a new project in SAFER’s portfolio aims to develop an assessment system to determine whether a driver is fit to drive

Alcohol intoxication and inattention are contributing factors to traffic accidents. Understanding when a driver is not capable of conveying its vehicle is a safe way, combined with countermeasures, can potentially prevent many of these accidents. Fit2Drive aims to deliver an algorithm that can assess the driver's state in real time, based on algorithms that that can detect inattention and alcohol

Evaluation of a fragrance system to counter sleepiness at the wheel – new research to start up at SAFER

Driver fatigue is a major cause of vehicle crashes and the prevention of fatigue is a major goal in the automotive industry. To reach the goal of zero traffic-accident fatalities, developing innovative solutions to prevent driver fatigue is a key objective. The aim of this new project is to evaluate the feasibility of using a chemosignal-based alerting fragrance (Moodify Red) during a driving task as well as assessing if the fragrance has a measurable effect on driver sleepiness and attention.
