SAFER’s project portfolio has been enriched with yet another project, EVIDENT - Enabling VIrtual valiDation and vErificatioN for ADAS and AD features. In order for new functions in vehicles, which are intended to help the driver in various situations, to actually contribute to increased safety on the roads, testing and verification is a very important ingredient in the product development

We welcome our new SAFER partner, Bookman, a company that creates inspiring visibility products with a minimalist design for cyclists, runners, pedestrians and others who need to see and be seen in traffic.

The AI Enhanced mobility program, previous called AI driven mobility, is now entering the second phase. The project consists of two closely connected building blocks; sub-groups for specific mobility areas, in which SAFER leads the traffic safety focus group, and a closely connected competence programme for knowledge sharing. This strategic project focuses on bridging the knowledge gap that exists between needs owners and AI experts.

In this project, an automated bicycle dummy is being developed for tests of active safety systems to be used for more realistic bike maneuvers, roll and wiggling. Repeatability compared with a human biker and the possibility of letting the vehicle collide with the test object are also important assets.

SAFER participated in this year’s edition of Transportforum in Linköping, June 16-17 - the largest annual conference on transport in Sweden. Knowledge of different datasets available in SAFER's network is important for efficient work within projects, providing new perspectives on past and present research, and being able to create completely new projects through data-driven research. To facilitate access to data, the SAFER Data Catalogue has been created, where relevant datasets within the network are described. This will help ensuring that SAFER continues to be relevant for its partners and also attractive to other research groups in the world.

We have another pre-study approved within SAFER's pre-study programme, Syncope - Unresponsive Driver & Sudden Illness Detection. The purpose of the project is to identify knowledge gaps regarding in-vehicle sudden illness detection by gathering people with background in traffic safety, biomedical engineering, medical science and transportation authority in a collaborative project.

Funding has recently been granted for the HEUDRIS project through Drive Sweden's strategic program. The aim of the project is to develop and create opportunities for successful involvement in various activities on the European research and innovation arena, as well as to contribute to increased internationalization.

Pionate has extensive experience from both academical research and product development in the automotive domain. Research includes, for example, autonomous vehicles, ADAS, driver behavior, vehicle data logging and creation of data sets, computer vision, biomimics, and also the development of related systems architectures and software. Areas of interest are subjects relating to data logging and Advanced Driver Assistance Aystems, but also Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Human Machine Interface, driver interaction and attention, sensors and sensor fusion and much more.

A major challenge in the development of future traffic systems and vehicle safety technologies is to be able to carry out tests in a real environment, which gives reliable results in all possible weather conditions and that also is repeatable. This problem is now being addressed by researchers by developing a method for simulating water spray, emulating water spray in rigs, and verifying that the results obtained correlate with real data.

In 2021, 210 people were killed on the Swedish roads. That is more than half the number compared to twenty-five years ago. The traffic safety efforts have had an effect, but further work is required to reach our national targets.
